1967-68 A&BC Star Players #4 Gordon Banks
This Gordon Banks card is number 4 from the 1967-68 A&BC Star Players set, identifying Banks as a Stoke City player.
A&BC (Anglo American Bubblegum Company) Star Players was a bubblegum card set issued in 1967, featuring leading players from across the Football League.
Banks had just arrived at Stoke City from Leicester City in April 1967 for £50,000 when this card was produced, making this his first season at the club. Despite winning the World Cup with England just months earlier, Leicester had deemed him surplus to requirements. It proved to be one of the great transfer bargains, as Banks would spend six outstanding seasons at Stoke, culminating in the 1972 League Cup victory, the only major trophy in the club’s history.
This card captures Banks as the reigning World Cup winner, at the peak of his powers and already established as one of the finest goalkeepers the game had ever seen. He would go on to make the legendary save from Pelé at the 1970 World Cup, a moment widely regarded as the greatest save in football history.
