At the time of issue, Mabbutt was in his eleventh season at Bristol Rovers. He was a dependable wing half who served the club through their years in the Second Division and remained loyal after relegation in 1962, helping re-establish the side in the Third Division.
Born in Aylesbury on 13 March 1936, Mabbutt represented Berkshire and Buckinghamshire at youth level and played military football alongside Eddie Colman, Albert Quixall and Tom Finney before signing for Bristol Rovers.
He made 395 league appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals, before joining Newport County in 1969. He is the father of Gary Mabbutt, who captained Tottenham Hotspur for 11 years and won 16 England caps, and Kevin Mabbutt of Bristol City.
