1967 Barratt Famous Footballers A.15 #5 Jimmy Greaves
This Jimmy Greaves card is number 5 from the 1967 Barratt Famous Footballers set (series A.15), identifying him as a Tottenham Hotspur player.
Barratt Famous Footballers was a long running series of confectionery trade cards produced by Barratt & Co of Wood Green, London. The A.15 series was issued in 1967, distributed with Barratt’s sweets.
This card was issued during the 1966-67 season, one of the most significant in Greaves’ career. He had been part of the England squad that won the 1966 World Cup the previous summer, though injury in the group stage cost him his place in the side and he was unable to reclaim it for the final. At club level, the season ended on a high as Tottenham won the FA Cup, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley.
Greaves remains the most prolific goalscorer in the history of English top flight football. His 357 First Division goals were scored with a natural instinct and effortless finishing ability that set him apart from every other striker of his era. He finished as the division’s top scorer six times, a feat no other player has matched.
